In 1990, aged only 32 years, Santorum comes in colors Republican in the House of Representatives of the United States and was elected against the Democrat incumbent. In November 1994 he was elected with the wave Republican senator from Pennsylvania in the United States Senate, defeating Harris Wofford, the outgoing Senator.
It participates actively in the side of Trent Lott and Newt Gingrich to reform the health system in 1996. In 2000, Rick Santorum is favored at the renewal of its mandate by 61% of voters. Member of fundamentalist Christian group The Family, Santorum owes its fame to extremely conservative positions, particularly in its fight against abortion.

Supporter of the sacredness of life and its preservation, Santorum did vote during the 107th Congress, the “Born-Alive Infants Protection Act and, in the 108th Congress manages to impose a ban of some form of abortion, it is true disputed even by liberals, like abortion procedure partial (partial-birth abortion), signed by George W. Bush.
His other aims combat the AIDS pandemic but his homophobic statements do not help his reputation.
